Jelena Ostapenko vs. Kiki Bertens on 06-May-2019 in Madrid Open Tennis Prediction
0
Jelena Ostapenko and Kiki Bertens meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Madrid Open.

Jelena Ostapenko is coming off a straight sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Ostapenko won 83 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Ostapenko won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 10 break points. Ostapenko needed a feel good victory, as she entered this tournament on a five-match losing streak and really hasn’t looked good since making the semifinals of the Wimbledon. It’s been constant losses from Ostapenko and somebody who has had serious issues with unforced errors. Jelena Ostapenko has a chance to win back-to-back matches on the main tour for the second time since Seoul. Ostapenko has eight career wins over top-10 players, two of which came last year. Ostapenko has split her last six matches on clay court.

Kiki Bertens is coming off a straight sets win over Katerina Siniakova that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Bertens won 73 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Bertens won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her nine break points. Bertens now has wins in seven of her last 10 matches and has quietly been one of the more consistent players these past few months on the women’s side. However, Bertens second serve has let her down in her last five sets, something she must pickup if hoping to make a deep run in Spain. Bertens looks to win at least two matches for the fourth time in her last five tournaments. Bertens has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.

These two have split the previous two meetings, as Bertens won the 2016 Wimbledon in straight sets and Ostapenko won a ITF match in 2015 in three sets.

It wasn’t that long ago when this would have been a must-see second round match, but Ostapenko has done nothing over the last eight months that suggests she can get up for this match. Ostapenko isn’t the same player she was earlier last year and she’s been fade material in just about every tournament she enters. It may come back sooner or later, but Ostapenko isn’t a player I’m trying to get behind.

Bertens has piled up the wins and has done a decent job of winning the matches she should win. Bertens advances to the third round.
